A chromate-free conversion coating for magnesium alloys has been developed by NEI Corporation.

The coating, NANOMYTE PT-60, is a chromate-free, self-healing conversion coating for magnesium that can be appled as a thin conversion coating to protect metal from corrosion, or as a pretreatment that improves adhesion with overlying paint, according to NEI.

The coating still provides corrosion resistance and is self-healing, the company said.

Unprotected magnesium panels were coated with a chromate conversion coating and NEI's PT-60 after 500 hours of salt-fog exposure. Panels were coated (and then scribed) with a military-specified primer (a) and a resin (b).

A single-component, waterborne coating, PT-60 contains no chromates or VOCs, and features a one-step immersion process and air dry.

The patent-pending coating formulation is sold as a liquid in one- to five-gallon buckets or 55-gallon drums.

Army Test

NEI says it has tested PT-60 with the U.S. Army Armament Research Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) in Picatinny Arsenal, NJ. The manufacturer says the product addresses the need for a chromate-free system for lightweight alloys used in weapon systems.

Headquartered in Somerset, NJ, NEI Corporation develops, manufactures, and distributes nanoscale materials for a wide range of industrial customers.
