NC Hockey Arena Invites Coating Bids

Friday, February 15, 2013

Cumberland County, NC, is seeking bidders for coating work on roof supports at the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville, a 15,000-seat venue for hockey, indoor football, and entertainment.

The project involves coating all exposed metal surfaces that make up the Coliseum's structural steel support system. Bids must be submitted by Feb. 28.

The facility is owned by Cumberland County and managed by the Civic Center Commission.

The Coliseum opened in 1997, seating up to 15,000 for sports and entertainment.

Scope of Work

The base bid involves pressure-washing the whole of the exterior surfaces at 3,500 PSI with a non-residual detergent solution using a rotating turbo nozzle for chalk removal. The steel will be spot-cleaned using power-tools (SSPC-SP 3) and/or abrasive-blasting to a commercial finish (SSPC-SP 6.)

The steel will be spot-primed with a polyamide epoxy coating and overcoated with a thermoset fluoropolymer finish.

The contract includes an alternate option at the disposal of the contractors; abrasive blast-cleaning all steel to SSPC-SP 6 (commercial); and recoating it with an organic zinc-rich urethane primer, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane intermediate, and a thermoset fluoropolymer polyurethane finish.

The project also includes removing existing lighting and conduits attached to the arena’s structural steel compression ring.

Containment will be required during the work period, as will ensuring protection of the roof membrane.

The owner conducted a mandatory pre-bid conference on Feb. 12.

About the Facility

Designed by Odell Associates, the Coliseum began construction in 1995 and opened its doors in October 1997. It seats up to 15,000 people, depending upon the event. Combined with the adjacent Rose Agri Expo Center, the two venues total 100,000 square feet of exposition space and 263,000 square feet of arena space.

The project involves abrasive blasting and recoating the structural steel roof supports.

The Coliseum features a rink for hockey and ice shows that can convert into a concert arena. It also houses the Southern Professional Hockey League’s 2007 Champions, the Fayetteville FireAntz, and the American Indoor Football League’s Cape Fear Heroes, according to the center’s website. The Coliseum also regularly hosts Total Nonstop Action and World Wrestling Entertainment events.

Facilities Magazine named the Coliseum winner of the Prime Site Award in 1998.
