Corrosives on Tap at New Coatings Show

A new U.S. coatings conference will showcase both theory and practice in the latest protective and other coatings technologies, organizers say.

Educational and technical presentations of the first Eastern Coatings Show will be aimed at "the theory, the science, the manufacturing, and the marketing of coatings which highlights the improvement of coatings performance and functionality beyond traditional expectations," according to the show's website.

The conference is scheduled for April 29 to May 2 in Atlantic City, NJ.

The show, intended to complement the Western Coatings Symposium, offers a two-track series of technical and educational presentations. Much of the conference will focus on anti-corrosives; other areas of emphasis include pigments and binders.

The show will look at future architectural coatings and trends in the marketplace.

The event is hosted by three Northeastern U.S. technical coatings organizations: the Metropolitan New York Coatings Association, the Philadelphia Society for Coatings Technology. and the New England Society for Coatings Technology.

The organizers say 51 exhibitors will be on hand, demonstrating products and services for today's coatings industry. Exhibit space is already sold out, but a waiting list has been established.

Modern Coatings Topics

Presentations range from nanotechnology and the coatings world, to an analysis of new hybrid molecules, to controlling the molecular structure of polymers. Topics include:

• Corrosion Mechanisms of Painted Metal;
• Corrosion Control by Utilizing Anticorrosive Pigments;
• The Rise of Revolutionary Resins;
• Zero VOC Colorants; and
• Optimizing Hiding and Performance of Architectural Coatings.

The show's first lineup includes new technologies in anti-corrosives and colorants.

Presenters are scheduled to include Robert McMullin and John Du of BYK USA; Dr. Robert A. Iezzi of RAI Technical Solutions Inc.; Matthew Linares of Evonik-Degussa Corp.; Sudhir Achar and Leo J. Procopio of The Dow Chemical Company; Bridgette M. Budhlall of the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, MA; Jennifer Hall of Reichhold Inc.; and Dr. Steffen Pilotek of Buhler Inc.

Focus on Future Trends

The organizers are anticipating a wide range of people in attendance due to the “broad spectrum of topics to be covered,” according to Bob Whiteley, a show committee member.

“This [show] should be relevant to those in the paints and coatings business as well as other allied industries such as printing inks, adhesives and building and construction chemicals, to name a few.

“One emphasis of the show is a look forward to help with understanding future trends in the marketplace."
