Fending off “intense international competition” for its veteran paint and coating trademarks and brand names, Trimite Global Coatings has acquired all assets of the bankrupt Trimite Ltd. business.

In fact, the acquisition will allow the coatings company to expand, the company's parent announced earlier this month.

Trimite Global Coatings is a global provider of paints, powder coatings and pre-treatments for key markets such as vehicles and engines, defense and aerospace, security, and agricultural and construction equipment.

 Trimite Global Coatings varieties

The Trimite-to-Trimite transaction involved more than 50 brands. The UK company, owned by the Stretford Group, has manufactured industrial liquid paints and powder coatings for four generations.

The auction house Charterfields announced in October that it had mounted an international search to find a buyer for Trimite Ltd.'s 47 trademarks, including some paint and coatings brands that predate the company's founding in 1940.

Also on the block, according to Charterfields, were Trimite’s paint recipes, production methods, and the domain names www.trimite.co.uk and www.trimite.com.

Protecting a Heritage

On Jan. 17, however, Trimite Global Coatings' parent company, the UK investment firm Stretford Group, announced that the coatings company had "purchased all intellectual property (IPR), including trademarks and brand names, relating to the former Trimite Ltd business that went into administration in March 2009."

The cost of the transaction, involving more than 50 brands, was not disclosed.

However, Trimite Global Coatings now says it has been "restructured by turnaround professionals" and has invested in research and development "with the aim of setting new standards in global coatings production and technologies and re-emerging as a key player in the global coatings industry."

"The R&D investment will further enhance the company’s comprehensive range of coatings technologies supplied to clients in the UK and internationally."

Jonathan Irwin, group managing director of Trimite Global Coatings, said the acquisition allowed the company "to protect the heritage and goodwill associated with the Trimite name in the coatings industry."

"We have worked with Stretford Group to become financially stable and create a firm foundation for growth by focusing on our key markets and technologies.”

Generations of Brands

Trimite’s oldest active trademark is Aquatite, which was registered in 1920. (The Toucan brand was originally registered in 1903, but it expired and was re-registered in 1948.)

Pep was registered in 1925; Brysolex, in 1934.

Nearly two dozen names joined the Trimite fold in the 1940s, including Trimite itself, Monolac, Brysol, Plasticlac, Triaqua, Trimacol and Trimacar. The newest name is Paintbond, which was registered in 2008.

Automotive Roots

Trimite started out in 1940 supplying cellulose paints to the automotive industry and went on to become a leading manufacturer of quality industrial paints, powder coatings and pre-treatments. The company had operations in Uxbridge, Bristol and Birmingham in the UK, as well as in Ireland and the United States.

“Trimite was, in its day, one of the UK’s foremost industrial paint and coatings manufacturers,” said an auction house official.
“Trimite was, in its day, one of the UK’s foremost industrial paint and coatings manufacturers,” an auction house official said last fall. The company says it still is.

Trimite's products are used by almost every manufacturing sector.

“Trimite was, in its day, one of the UK’s foremost industrial paint and coatings manufacturers,” Ian Maycock, director at Charterfields, said last fall. “This is a rare opportunity to acquire well-established trademarks and brand names, many of which are internationally recognized.”

But reports of Trimite's demise proved premature, the company now says.

“We have developed an exciting roadmap of new initiatives and continue to make ongoing investment within Trimite Global Coatings in line with our long term strategy," said Stretford Group chairman David Roberts.

"We were the natural owner for the Trimite assets offered for sale, and we moved quickly and decisively to ensure we purchased them.”
