Snow Plows Get Artistic Touch

For most kids, local snowplows have traditionally been mere killjoy pieces of equipment that open the dreaded path to school on snowy days.

Now, however, students across the country are embracing the plows (at least artistically) and showing off their creativity by painting murals on dozens of the massive blades.

Evanston, IL

Take Evanston, IL, where  the city’s Streets and Sanitation Division invited students from seven schools to paint murals on the city's snowplow blades for its annual Painting Evanston’s Plows (P.E.P) contest.

The division dropped off a plow blade and paint kit at each school and encouraged the classes to show school, city, holiday, or winter spirit.

The finished murals are on display in front of the Evanston Civic Center.

City of Evanston

Several schools across the country held plow decorating contests.

Morgantown, WV

Meanwhile, after a year's hiatus, the Snow Plow Painting Program returned to Monongalia County in Morgantown, WV, where officials had a snowplow blade and five quarts of paint (red, yellow, blue, white, and black) delivered to 10 schools.

The supplies arrived in mid-September, and students were given one month to paint and decorate the blades any way they wished. Plows were picked up on Oct. 15 and received a clear coat before being mounted onto trucks.

“This is the first time we’ve had this many schools participating,” said Damien Davis, a city engineer.

All 10 plows appeared in the Christmas Parade, and the students who painted them were invited to march alongside.

City of Sioux Falls

In Sioux Falls, the city teamed up with a local mall to display the plows during a breast cancer awareness event.

“It’s a change from seeing the same white or blue snow plows every winter,” Davis said. “It makes snow days that much more fun for the kids.”

The program started in 2008 by Bill Rumble, Assistant Public Works Director. He saw it a way to help students, teachers, and parents learn more about public works.

Sioux Falls, SD

In Sioux Falls, SD, 27 plows received an artistic upgrade in the 3rd Annual Paint the Plows Event.

For the first time, the Sioux Falls Street Department teamed up with the Empire Mall's Paint the Mall Pink event for breast cancer awareness and displayed the plows at the mall in October.

Who knows? A plow with a friendly face may take the sting out of the kids' next snowy day. On the other hand, even the toughest coating may not offer protection from disappointment.
