Beating out over 200 competitors with its intricate mural, a 500,000-gallon pedestal water tank on the Emerald Coast of Okaloosa Island, FL, has been named Tnemec's 2012 Tank of the Year.

The tank features the logo for the Okaloosa County Tourist Development Commission (TDC), which paid for the cost of the multi-colored mural.

"This year's judges were impressed by the tank's colorful artwork depicting the Emerald Coast, which is named for the color of the waters reflecting off the quartz sand beaches," said Doug Hansen, director of Tnemec's Water Tank Market.

Creating an Award-Winning Landmark

Hansen called the tank mural a "tribute to the efforts of Okaloosa County government and citizens to protect their sugar white beaches and emerald green waters from all environmental threats."

The Emerald Coast was one of over 200 tank nominations, the most Tnemec says it has received since starting the competition in 2006.

The exterior coating system consisted of a prime coat of Series 135 Chembuild, a modified polyamine epoxy; an intermediate coat of Series 73 Endura-Shield, an aliphatic acrylic polyurethane; and an advanced fluoropolymer topcoat using Series 700 HydroFlon.

The topcoat offers outstanding resistance to ultraviolet light and and long-term gloss and color retention, the company says.

"In addition to promoting Emerald Coast tourism with the attractive design, the Okaloosa County's Water and Sewer System received a corrosion resistant coating system for its water tank at no cost to ratepayers," Hansen said.

Series 700 HydroFlon was also used for the lettering and the mural, which required 14 different colors ranging from white to multiple shades of blue and green.

The mural was painted freehand with brushes and rollers.

"I recall seeing the original artwork and thinking to myself that there is no way they could reproduce that design, but the painters did a wonderful job," said Robert Crumbaugh, a Tnemec Coating Consultant from SteelCon Coating Systems.

Ohio-based American Suncraft Construction Company and mural artist Eric Henn applied the exterior coating system. Polyengineering Inc. (Shalimar, FL) provided engineering services. The two companies also teamed up on two other Emerald Coast projects involving 200,000-gallon towers that also competed in this year's contest.

Because the mural was so complex and the painters' had to work from a 140-foot lift, the project had to be completed without using containment, despite the tank's close proximity to a busy boat dealership and marina.

The Runners-Up

This year, Tnemec received more entries than any other year since the Tank of the Year competition started in 2006. All of the tanks feature Tnemec coatings and coating systems.

The company has named four additional nominations as runners-up.

Runners-up included standpipe near Auburn, WA, (left) and a ground storage tank in Puyallup, WA.

"Each of these projects is unique for their memorable graphic designs, which made a lasting impression on our Tank of the Year judges and on their communities," Hansen said.

Listed alphabetically, the four runners-up are:

  • A 120-foot-tall standpipe near in Auburn, WA, featuring a mural of salmon, which have helped sustain ancestors of the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe for centuries.
  • A one-million-gallon legged tank in Panama City, FL, featuring an elaborate mural of boats, pelicans, and beach scenes.
  • A 2.9-million-gallon ground storage tank in Puyallup, WA, with a landscape mural of Douglas Firs and other trees indigenous to the Pacific Northwest.
  • A 150,000-gallon legged tank in St. Robert, MO, featuring an American flag design and patriotic message.
