Louisiana officials have awarded a $25,137,642 contract to North Star Painting of Youngstown, OH, for the second phase of painting on the 8,236-foot-long Sunshine Bridge.

The 48-year-old structure connects Baton Rouge and New Orleans over the Mississippi River via LA 70.

The bridge, connecting Baton Rouge and New Orleans, plays an important role in evacuation.

Once ridiculed as a “Bridge to Nowhere,” the cantilever structure plays an important role in storm evacuation and industrial development along the Mississippi River.

Scope of Work

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development project, which had been estimated between $20 million and $30 million, involves cleaning and recoating the 3,327-foot-long main truss span, including the deck span, and four approaches (1,789 foot, 1,504 foot, 948 foot and 708 foot).

The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate, and a polyurethane finish. The contract requires Class 1 containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 to capture the existing lead-based coatings. SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications are also required. The contractor is required to furnish NACE-certified quality control inspectors.

The project also includes performing additional steel and concrete repairs, including replacing bearings and repairing bridge deck surfaces.

The first phase of the project was awarded to Texas Bridge Inc., of Humble, TX, for $6,223,574 and included recoating a 3,160-foot-long segment of the bridge's East approaches and a 1,444-foot-long segment of the West approaches.

Reported by Paint BidTracker, a construction reporting service devoted to identifying contracting opportunities for the coatings community.
