Authorities are investigating the death of a Pennsylvania ship repair worker who became entangled in machinery while servicing a crane 100 feet in the air.

Craig Plyler, 48, of Erie, an employee of Donjon Shipbuilding & Repair of Erie, perished about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 17) from traumatic injuries, authorities said.

Craig M. Plyler, 48, was remembered as a devoted husband and father of three daughters.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the accident. The company did not respond to a request for comment.

Difficult Recovery

Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook said that Plyler had been killed almost instantly.

“There’s still a lot of information that needs to be gathered,” Cook told WICU-TV in Erie. “But it was clearly an accidental death.”

Recovering Plyler’s body took several hours as the Erie Fire Department was the only agency that had a crane high enough to reach the site, Cook said.

The 44-acre shipyard is a major employer in Erie County, with about 200 employees.

Reports said Plyler was a crane operator who had been performing “routine maintenance” on the equipment when the accident occurred.

An obituary described Plyler as a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
