Navigating the demands of SSPC’s long-awaited overhaul to PA 2 will be the topic of a free upcoming webinar by SSPC and JPCL.
“The New PA 2: Procedure for Determining Conformance to Dry Coating Thickness,” set for 11 a.m. to noon EDT Oct. 17, will delve into the specifics of the newly revised coating thickness measurement standard.

The presenter will be Bill Corbett, of KTA-Tator Inc., who chaired the committee that overhauled the standard.
First published in 1973, the standard has had only editorial revisions until its recent overhaul. The extensive changes have been called long overdue.
The revised standard focuses on the frequency and acceptability of measurement acquisition, while leaving gage usage procedures to ASTM D7091. The webinar will describe the new PA 2, including eight appendices that provide guidance for special applications of the standard. The basic content of ASTM D7091 will also be described.

About the Presenter
Corbett is the Professional Services Business Unit Manager for KTA-Tator. He has conducted coatings training courses and instrument use workshops for a variety of industries in both the private and public sector for more than 23 years.
He is an SSPC Certified Protective Coatings Specialist, an SSPC Level 3 Certified Protective Coatings Inspector, an SSPC Level 2 Certified Bridge Coatings Inspector, and a NACE International Level 3 Certified Coatings Inspector.

“Waterjetting—New Standards for Assessing End Condition Cleanliness,” presented July 9, discussed the four new waterjetting standards that will succeed SSPC-SP 12/NACE No. 5, “Surface Preparation and Cleaning of Metals by Waterjetting Prior to Recoating,” originally published in 2002. The presenter was Rich Burgess, of KTA-Tator Inc.

“Measuring Moisture in Concrete,” presented June 27, discussed multiple methods for determining moisture content, including relative humidity probes, anhydrous calcium chloride, plastic sheet tests, and a variety of electronic instruments.

“Selecting the Right Abrasive,” presented June 13, described how to estimate abrasive productivity, consumption rates and costs for specific blasting activities when specifying the type of abrasive to be used during surface preparation of a steel structure. The presenter was Earl Bowry, an Industrial Engineer/Protective Coatings Specialist with Newport News Shipbuilding.

“Intumescent Coatings: State of the Technology,” presented May 31, focused on the current state of intumescent coatings. It addressed how intumescent coatings work; coating types; application, cost and specification considerations; and the overall benefits of fireproofing steel.
