Strengthening its position as a full-service provider for industrial coating projects throughout the U.S. and Canada, scaffold and access equipment supplier Safway Group has acquired North American Coatings (NAC) and its family of companies.

 North American Coatings LLC

NAC is one of the largest industrial painting companies in the United States, serving the pipeline and other industries.

One of the U.S.’s largest painting contractors, North American Coatings specializes in the application of high-performance coatings for the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, power, refining, marine, manufacturing, transportation and commercial construction industries.

The Safway acquisition includes North American Coatings’ subsidiaries:

• CL Coatings, which provides industrial painting, fireproofing, and specialty coating services throughout the Midwest and Southeastern U.S.;

• Industrial Coatings & Fireproofing (ICF), of Long Beach, CA, and Baton Rouge, LA, which specializes in applying intumescent and cementitious fireproofing materials and corrosion-inhibiting coatings; and

• SEI Coatings, which provides industrial coating services to the transportation industry and government facilities.

Independent Operation

Safway has worked with CL and ICF as a supplier and partner on projects for six years, said Safway Group president and CEO Bill Hayes. Based in Mokena, IL, NAC is one of the top six industrial coating companies in the United States, with $37.3 million in revenues in 2010.

Safway provides scaffolding and access solutions like the one shown here on the Forth Road Bridge in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The NAC companies will continue to operate independently as the painting, coatings, and fireproofing subsidiary of Safway.

“The cornerstone of our philosophy, which is evident throughout the NAC family of companies, is ‘Trust, Respect, Safety, and Quality,’” said NAC president Mike Chakos.

“This culture has been cultivated over several generations and countless successful projects for some of the largest Fortune 500 companies.

“We have provided service on large capital projects and implemented long-term maintenance coatings programs that resulted in substantial benefits for our customers. We have received numerous safety awards from our clients.”

About Safway

“Acquiring an outstanding, national industrial painting and coatings company such as NAC and its family of companies is part of our overall multi-service strategy,” said Hayes. “Many of our customers would prefer to work with companies that offer scaffolding, insulation, and painting, rather than contract separately for these services.”

Based in Waukesha, WI, Safway provides scaffolding and access equipment and services through a network of about 85 branch locations in the U.S. and Canada and a system of distributors in South America.

Unbelievable. All the painting contractors that are currently renting from Safway(Spider)will consider them now to be a competitor. I don't think competing against customers is a brillant move and I hope it backfires.

Comment from Michael Homes, (10/5/2012, 7:46 AM)

Tim Johnes, I currently work for safway and think that this is a positive move forward to become a multi - services company. We compete with Brock,Brand, Mobley, etc. and they currently do multi service. Also we are not connected to "SPIDER" they are not part of our company.

Comment from Liz Callahan, (10/8/2012, 2:31 PM)

Roger that on Michael's comment, Spider provides suspended access solutions to coatings contractors large and small and is in no way affiliated with Safway.

Comment from Thea Michailides, (10/24/2012, 1:03 PM)

how will they be a competitor for painting contractors? How will this impact CL Coatings unions?

Comment from Tim Johnes, (10/25/2012, 2:53 PM)

My apology, I was confusing Safway with SafeWorks. Tim Johnes
