The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is inviting bids for the second phase of painting of the Sunshine Bridge—a project estimated at up to $30 million.

Once ridiculed as a “Bridge to Nowhere,” the 8,236-foot-long cantilever structure plays an important role in storm evacuation and industrial development along the Mississippi River.

The bridge, which opened in 1964, connects Baton Rouge and New Orleans over the Mississippi via LA 70.

In the first phase of the project, Texas Bridge Inc., of Humble, TX, was awarded a $6,223,574 contract to recoat a 3,160-foot-long segment of the bridge's East approaches and a 1,444-foot-long segment of the West approaches.

Bid submittals for Phase 2 are due at 10 a.m. Oct. 10.

Scope of Work

The project's second phase will involve cleaning and recoating existing structural steel surfaces on the bridge’s 3,327-foot-long main truss span, including the deck span; and on its four approaches, which range from 708 feet to 1,789 feet long.

The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to SSPC-SP 10 (near white) and coated with an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy-intermediate and a polyurethane finish.

The existing coatings contain lead; Class 1 containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 will be required, as will SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications. The contractor also must furnish NACE-certified quality control inspectors.

The project also includes performing additional steel and concrete repairs, including replacing bearings and repairing the bridge deck.
