Authorities worked Wednesday (Aug. 8) to clean up a major paint spill along a Virginia highway, where a big rig loaded with coatings overturned.

The crash occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 7), when the driver of a 2001 Freightliner Truck ran off the left side of the onramp from Route 360 westbound to Interstate 295 southbound in Hanover County, Virginia State Police said.

The crash left about 200 gallons of paint on the road, police said.

The crash left about 200 gallons of paint on the road, police said. The driver was cited for reckless driving.

The rig overturned onto its right side, dumping about 200 gallons of paint onto the highway, said State Police Sgt. Thomas J. Molnar.

No other vehicles were involved.

Police said the rig had been hauling water-soluble paint and water in containers on the back of the truck. The crash closed the ramp for about five hours so authorities could right the truck and clean-up crews could unload the paint and water into other containers.

The driver, David Kao, 65, of Fremont, OH, was wearing a seatbelt and suffered minor injuries; he was assessed at the scene by emergency medical technicians. Kao, who had been taking the load from Port Royal to DeWitt, VA, was charged with reckless driving.  Speed is considered a factor in the crash, police said.

Kao’s truck is registered to Interstate Road Management Corp. of Hazleton, PA, police said. The company is owned by DBi Services, a Hazleton-based provider of a variety of industrial services.

DBi did not respond Wednesday to a request for comment.

Authorities were still at the scene Wednesday, focused on mitigating the environmental damage, said Battalion Chief William E. Jones of Hanover Fire and EMS.

All of the investigations were continuing.
