Wielding the right coatings to thwart corrosion under insulation will be the topic of a free upcoming webinar sponsored by JPCL and SSPC.
“Selecting Coatings Under Insulation” will be presented from 11 a.m. to noon EDT July 18.
This webinar will discuss the risk of corrosion under insulation (CUI) and how to avoid it with proper coating selection and application. The discussion will include a variety of factors that should be considered when selecting coatings for metals under insulation, including system operating temperatures, application and site requirements, surface preparation requirements, environmental requirements during coating work, and compatibility of coating system with insulating materials.

About the Presenter
The presenter will be Brent Griffin, a coatings engineer with Chevron Energy Technology Company.
Griffin has performed inspections and consulting for the water, oil, gas, nuclear, pipeline and shipping industries for 20 years. His tenure with Chevron includes five years as Global SME for Protective Coatings and Linings and Thermal Spray Metallics.
The Northern California resident is a graduate of California State University at Long Beach and holds a B.A. in Industrial Education.

The presenter was Rich Burgess, of KTA-Tator Inc.
“Measuring Moisture in Concrete,” presented June 27, discussed multiple methods for determining moisture content, including relative humidity probes, anhydrous calcium chloride, plastic sheet tests, and a variety of electronic instruments.
“Selecting the Right Abrasive,” presented June 13, described how to estimate abrasive productivity, consumption rates and costs for specific blasting activities when specifying the type of abrasive to be used during surface preparation of a steel structure. The presenter was Earl Bowry, an Industrial Engineer/Protective Coatings Specialist with Newport News Shipbuilding.
“Intumescent Coatings: State of the Technology,” presented May 31, focused on the current state of intumescent coatings. It addressed how intumescent coatings work; coating types; application, cost and specification considerations; and the overall benefits of fireproofing steel.
“Conditioning Atmospheres Inside Tanks for Cleaning and Painting,” presented April 4, focused on how to use heating, cooling, humidification and dehumidification to control the atmospheric conditions required in tanks and other enclosed spaces. The presenter was Brian Peroni, a corrosion and coating specialist with Florida Power & Light/NextEra Energy.
“Writing a Clear Coating Spec for Wastewater Treatment Facilities,” presented March 21, walked specification writers through the steps of developing an effective, comprehensive coating specification for wastewater treatment facilities. These environments carry multiple substrates and multiple exposure conditions that can make developing a coating spec challenging. The presenter was Jim Machen, Senior Coatings Consultant, KTA-Tator Inc.
“Achieving Efficiency in Abrasive Blasting,” presented March 14, covered concrete ways to measure and improve efficiency in abrasive blasting. Also addressed: control system types, impediments to productivity, fine-tuning a blast system, suggested system set-up, and safety considerations. The presenter was Bill Nelson, of Axxiom Manufacturing Inc.
“Measuring Adhesion to Concrete,” presented Feb. 23, discussed the secrets of performing an accurate, reliable adhesion pull-off test. The presenter was David Beamish, president of DeFelsko Corp., which manufactures hand-held coating test instruments.
“Quality Control of Industrial Painting Operations,” presented Feb. 15, covered many of the issues involved in controlling the quality of workmanship related to coating application. The presenter was Bill Corbett, Technical Services Manager for KTA-Tator Inc.
“Field-Applied Fluoropolymer Coatings for Bridges,” presented Feb. 8, discussed the use of FEVE fluoropolymer coatings as topcoats on bridges. The webinar also reviewed Japan’s experience with using fluoropolymers as topcoats on bridges.
“Illumination of Industrial Painting Projects,” presented Jan. 18, provided information on the quantity and quality of lighting on industrial painting projects that is most conducive to achieving quality surface preparation and coating application, productivity, inspection and other quality control activities, and accident prevention.
