The brightest and most influential minds in the protective and marine coatings industry will star in JPCL’s first-ever special 13th issue, coming in August.
The issue will feature the 24 winners of the venerable journal’s award, Top Thinkers: The Clive Hare Honors, announced last fall.
The special issue will showcase contributions by coatings professionals of intellect, innovation and passion—“persons in love with their work and burning with ideas to improve the industry,” according to Harold Hower, CEO of Technology Publishing Co., the publisher of JPCL.
Thought Leader Profiles
The award winners were selected for their contributions to the coatings industry through publications, research, teaching, and leadership in standards development and coatings organizations.

The honorees include Hare himself, dean of the coatings industry and a long-time JPCL contributing editor and author. His collected works were organized into two well-respected books, Protective Coatings: Fundamentals of Chemistry and Composition and Paint Film Degradation: Mechanisms and Control.
In addition to Hare, the Top Thinkers are:
• David Boyd, Vulcan Painters Inc.;
• Massimo Cornago, Consultant;
• David Deacon, Consultant;
• Johnny Eliasson, American Bureau of Shipping;
• Rob Francis, Aurecon;
• Brendan Fitzsimons, Pyeroy;
• Ben Fultz, Bechtel;
• Fred Goodwin, BASF;
• Gary Hall, Sauereisen;
• Alison Kaelin, KTA-Tator Inc.;

• Tim Race, Kaked LLC (retired);

While many of the Top Thinkers have contributed technical articles to JPCL, the special issue, to be published with the regular August JPCL, will focus on the winners themselves and their paths in the industry—their training and education, industry experience and credentials, significant projects, and how they came to lead the industry through their thinking and actions, said editor in chief Karen A. Kapsanis.
A Classic Returns
The issue will also include Hare’s October 1984 JPCL article, “’Specific Utility’ in the Design of Coating Systems for Steel Bridges”—“which, like the rest of Hare’s work, still speaks to industry needs,” said Kapsanis.
Published in JPCL’s very first year, Hare’s article helped lay the foundation for now-standard practices in lead paint management and coating maintenance on bridges and other industrial structures.
In addition to the Top Thinker honorees, the special issue will honor other industry leaders of past decades. These include many who have been recognized by SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings, for their distinctive and significant roles in strengthening the association and elevating the industry through committee work, development of consensus standards, educational roles, technical achievements, and dissemination of SSPC’s work through local chapter efforts.
