Creaform, a global provider of portable 3D measurement technologies, has released the first major update to its Pipecheck software module for pipeline external corrosion analysis.
Pipecheck version 1.1 is based on user feedback in the oil and gas community to Creaform’s original Pipecheck software, introduced last fall, said product manager Jérôme-Alexandre Lavoie.
Instant, On-Site Results
Pipecheck’s pipeline external corrosion module is designed to deliver fast, efficient, streamlined data processing that generates instant, on-site results. Data are presented in a complete Excel report. Creaform says the system is more accurate and repeatable than pit gauges, ultrasonic (UT) probes, single-line lasers, and other traditional measurement methods.

The first Pipecheck release “has been very well received,” said Lavoie, “and it was a strong motivation for us to push further and improve it.”
The new module allowed developers “to actually fine-tune existing functionalities and develop new features that meet the specific needs of pipeline operators and service companies even more closely,” he added. “Making it more easy to use and learn was also a major point.”
Features and Updates
Among the changes to the 1.1. version:
• A new interaction rule increases the number of corrosion cases that can be processed. Interaction criteria match the feature shape.
• Merging of scan files makes it possible to use two scanners and merge scan data to analyze the complete part. The manufacturer reports that this improves accuracy over long pipe segments and increases productivity by reducing acquisition and calculation times.
• Force to corroded area functionality provides high flexibility to define a corrosion pattern. “In a few clicks,” Creaform reports, “an experienced user can actually prevent the virtual pit gauge functionality from using some particular points.”
• The virtual pit gauge feature has been enhanced with interactive operation messages that provide instant feedback to the operator about the software configurations. Critical areas are automatically identified in the 2D view.
Creaform develops, manufactures and sells 3D portable measurement technologies and specializes in 3D engineering services for the automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, oil and gas, power generation and other industries.
