Dow Coating Materials, the world’s largest supplier of raw materials for the coatings industry, plans to build a major manufacturing plant in Saudi Arabia to support the growing Middle East market.

News of the plant follows the company’s launch of Oudra, a new protective coatings brand designed for the punishing Middle East environment.

The plant will be built in the Jubail Industrial City, a major industrial complex on the Arabian Gulf.

Oudra was rolled out regionally in February at the 14th Middle East Corrosion Conference in Bahrain. It is expected to reach the North American market later this year.

‘Key Growth Market’

DCM’s new Saudi facility will be located at Jubail Industrial City on the Arabian Gulf, one of the country’s eight major industrial complexes. The plant will manufacture a wide range of coating materials for both Saudi and export markets.

“By investing in a new coatings facility in Saudi Arabia, we are moving closer to our regional customers, and realizing our regional business objectives in a key growth market for Dow,” said Jerome Peribere, President and Chief Executive Officer, Dow Advanced Materials Division (AMD).

Once a major importer, Saudi Arabia now produces a wide range of industrial and consumer goods for export markets.

Added Dr. Ilham Kadri, General Manager, AMD, Middle East & Africa; “Our investment in a new world-class coatings facility will support our growth ambitions by bringing the most advanced and sustainable coating materials to the Saudi market and by enabling us to deliver innovation that is tailored to the region’s needs.”

Saudi Investments

The new facility is the latest in Dow’s series of investments in Saudi Arabia. The company’s presence there began 35 years ago with two joint ventures with E.A. Juffali & Brothers and Arabian Chemical Company Ltd., manufacturing Styrofoam insulation in Jeddah and latex in Jubail.

In July 2011, Dow and Saudi Aramco announced an agreement to form Sadara Chemical Co., a joint venture to build and operate a major chemical complex in Jubail. The complex is expected to be among the world’s largest petrochemical facilities and would represent the largest foreign direct investment into Saudi Arabia’s petrochemical sector.

Also in 2011, the company established the Dow Middle East and Africa R&D Center at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology as part of an R&D collaboration agreement with the university.

Dow also recently announced plans to invest in a manufacturing facility for Dow FilmTec Reverse Osmosis (RO) elements in Saudi Arabia.

Dow Coating Materials operates 43 manufacturing plants and 13 R&D facilities worldwide.
