Safway Services LLC, the fast-growing North American provider of scaffolding and access equipment and services, has announced the appointment of Bill Hayes as President.

Hayes, also named COO and a company director, was most recently President of Honeywell Safety Products, a global provider of personal protective equipment and products. HSP more than tripled in size during Hayes’ four-year tenure as president.

On the Move

Safway Services is also growing and changing. In 2009, ThyssenKrupp AG sold the company (then known as ThyssenKrupp Safway) after three years to Odyssey Investment Partners LLC. The deal also restored Safway’s familiar brand name.

Atlantic Hoisting & Scaffolding was one of two major acquisitions that Safway Services made in 2011
Atlantic Hoisting & Scaffolding was one of two major acquisitions that Safway Services made in 2011.

In 2011, Safway acquired two well-known companies with long histories in the access industry.

• In May, Safway acquired Atlantic Hoisting & Scaffolding LLC, the largest provider of scaffolding and hoisting solutions in the New York City area. The new division, known as Safway Atlantic, expanded Safway’s hoisting capabilities for complex metropolitan projects.

• In November, Safway acquired Waco Scaffolding & Equipment, a major provider of scaffolding and access equipment and services, as part of its bankruptcy proceedings. Ohio-based Waco sells, rents, assembles and dismantles scaffolding and related access products for the construction and shipbuilding industries.

Also in November, Safway announced an agreement under which Brazilian scaffold producer Mecan Co. would manufacture and distribute Safway’s QuikDeck Suspended Access System in Brazil and across South America.

‘Challenging Market’

“Since our partnership with Odyssey in 2009, we have continued to build our business in a challenging market,” said Marc Wilson, Safway Services CEO.

“Bill’s wealth of experience in our end markets and in executing strategic acquisitions, as well as his focus on serving customers, will deepen our management capacity and position us for continued strong growth.”

Hayes was President of Norcross Safety Products’ industrial business from 2006 to 2008, when that company was acquired by Honeywell. Before Norcross, he was President and CEO of the Americas Group for Asia-based Nitto Denko Corp. from 1994 to 2006.

Under his leadership at HSP, the company increased in value to $2 billion from $600 million, “dramatically improved profitability and working capital performance, and successfully executed the most complex acquisition integration in recent Honeywell history,” according to Safway.

‘Unique Opportunity’

Hayes said, “I am very excited to be joining Safway, especially at this point in time. To help lead a company of this caliber and leading market position, and have the chance to partner again with Odyssey Investment Partners, whom I worked with while at Norcross, is truly a unique opportunity.”

He added, “Safway has great customers, committed and experienced employees, and a strong customer service and safety focus that I share. I look forward to helping lead Safway’s very talented management team and continuing to work with Marc and the Board.”
