The Oregon Department of Transportation will accept bids Jan. 12 for cleaning and recoating of the landmark Astoria-Megler Bridge—a project valued at $20 million to $30 million.

The longest steel continuous truss bridge in North America, the Astoria-Megler carries the last segment of U.S. Route 101 (locally known as the Oregon Coast Highway) across the Columbia River between Astoria, OR, and Point Ellice near Megler, WA. The span, which opened in 1966, is 14 miles (23 km) from the mouth of the river.

At more than four miles, the Astoria-Megler is the longest steel continuous truss bridge in North America.

Subjected to continuous ocean salt spray, the bridge is rusting and was last painted in the 1980s. The bridge was designed jointly by the Oregon and Washington state highway departments, and the two states will split the cost of the recoating project.

Scope of Work

The project involves cleaning and recoating structural steel surfaces above the deck on the southbound end of the cantilever truss bridge, which is 21,474 feet long and 28 feet wide. The work must be completed by July 31, 2015.

The existing coatings contain lead; containment will be required. ODOT plans to advertise a contract later for coatings inspection services.
