Webinar to Help Compute Coating Costs

Untangling the complex considerations involved in determining a coating’s true cost will be the topic of a free upcoming webinar presented by JPCL and SSPC.

“Calculating Coating Lifetime Costs” will be presented from 11 a.m. to noon EST Dec. 19.

Presenter Jayson Helsel, of KTA-Tator Inc., will explain how to identify coating systems for various service environments, estimate their service lives, calculate the installed cost, and determine the most cost-effective system on a long-term basis.

About the Presenter

Helsel, a senior coatings consultant with KTA, holds an MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. He is a registered professional engineer, an SSPC Protective Coatings Specialist, SSPC-certified Concrete Coatings Inspector, and a NACE-certified Coatings Inspector.

At KTA, Helsel manages coating projects, performs failure investigations and coating surveys, writes coating specifications, and teaches coating inspection courses. He previously served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard with experience in marine vessel inspection.
 
QP Webinar Set for Wednesday

On Wednesday (Dec. 14), JPCL and SSPC will present a free webinar on navigating the requirements of SSPC’s Painting Contractor Certification Program.

“Comparison of Documentation, Hold Point and Quality Control Training Requirements in Various SSPC Contractor  QP Standards” will be presented from 11 a.m. to noon EST.

The webinar will provide a general overview of SSPC’s QP standards used in the Painting Contractor Certification Program (PCCP) and describe the scope and content of QP 1, QP 3, QP 6, and QP 8. Other topics will include requirements for training, hold point observations, and QC documentation.

The presenter will be Alison B. Kaelin, Corporate Quality Assurance Manager and Senior Consultant with KTA-Tator Inc.

Registration, CEU Credits

The programs are part of the JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.

SSPC is an accredited training provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), and Professional Engineers in Florida may submit SSPC Webinar Continuing Education Units to the board. To do so, applicants must download the FBPE CEU form and pass the Webinar Exam, which costs $25.

“Aerial Lift and Scaffold Safety,” presented Nov. 30, focused on the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s requirements for use of scaffolding and aerial lifts in the construction industry.  The presenter was Stan Liang, a Certified Industrial Hygienist and Certified Safety Professional with KTA-Tator Inc.

Webinar: Spot Repair and Priming

“Spot Repair and Priming as an Alternative to Full Coating Removal,” presented Nov. 16, reviewed the design of spot repair (as opposed to full coating removal) and described the benefits of this coating option in terms of economics, corrosion control and aesthetics. The presenter was Tony Serdenes, Regional Vice President/ Director of Coatings for Greenman-Pedersen Inc. and a 30-year veteran of the coatings industry.

Webinar: Abrasive Blasting Operations

“Quality Control of Abrasive Blast Cleaning Operations,” presented Oct. 19, addresses the quality items relating to abrasive blast cleaning, including equipment, materials and the prepared surfaces.

The presenter was Bill Corbett, Technical Services Manager and the Professional Services Business Unit Manager for KTA-Tator Inc.

Webinar: Creating a Contractor Safety Program

“Creating a Contractor Safety Program that Works,” presented Sept. 14, provides guidance for industrial painting contractors who have to develop a company safety program. The webinar discusses good safety practices and regulatory requirements, including the current OSHA guidelines for a company safety program.

The presenter was Bob Ikenberry, corporate safety director and project manager for California Engineering Contractors, and an SSPC-certified Protective Coating Specialist.

Webinar: Public Works Projects

“One-Coat Systems in Public Works Projects,” presented Aug. 10, describes the design and data derived from two FHWA research projects on coating performance, focusing on promising one-coat systems and systems with potential for long-term service. The presenter was Eric S. Kline, of KTA-Tator Inc.

Webinar: Protecting Steel Edges

“Protecting Steel Edges,” presented June 8, describes specific methods of obtaining sufficient coating thickness on steel edges and other irregular steel surfaces, where coatings tend to pull away during curing. The presenter was Bob Kogler, of Rampart LLC, former head of corrosion protection and coatings research at the Federal Highway Administration.

 Webinar: Achieving Durability in Concrete Repairs

“Achieving Durability in Concrete Repairs,” presented May 11, provides an introductory-level overview on selecting and using repair materials for structural concrete in a way that assures the durability of the repair.

The presenter was Peter Emmons, CEO of the Structural Group and past president of the International Concrete Repair Institute.
