The Powder Coatings Institute will return to a solo show format in 2012, after cancelling The North American Coating Show it had co-hosted for two years with NACE International.

PCI’s new event, COATING 2012, will be held Oct. 9-11, 2012, in St. Louis—the same dates and location that had been slated for the NAI Coating Show with NACE.

COATING 2012 will take the place of the previously scheduled North American Industrial Coating Show next October in St. Louis.

PCI announced the cancellation and new show in a press release this week. NACE did not mention either development on its site.

“NACE and PCI had two great years together presenting NAI,” PCI program director Jennifer Egan said Thursday (Dec. 8). “However, both associations came to the conclusion that we should put our efforts in other events.”

High Hopes

PCI and NACE had had high hopes for the NAI show, billing it as “the largest industrial coating conference in North America.”

Before the first show in 2010, organizers said they were expecting more than 4,000 attendees and planning “one of the largest exhibit floors in the world dedicated to industrial coatings.”

After the 2011 show in October in Cincinnati, the show reported “over 1,500” attendees and fewer than 100 exhibitors.

Cancellation Notice

“After working with NACE for two years to merge the industrial coatings world with the performance coatings world, PCI has decided to present their own event, COATING 2012,” PCI’s announcement said.

“The NAI Coating show was moderately successful, but PCI said it felt this combination did not have the broad appeal exhibitors and attendees were looking for. Therefore, PCI and NACE have agreed to end The North American Industrial (NAI) Coatings Show.”

The web site for next year’s NAI show was still live on Thursday, but Egan said it would go dark soon.

COATING 2012

COATING 2012 returns PCI to the solo event it had mounted for about 20 years before teaming up with NACE.

Plans for the show are still in the early stages, but Egan said the event would include both powder and liquid industrial coatings. The show site, www.coating-show.com, is expected to be live later this month.

 COATNG 2012
PCI returns to its original show format with COATING 2012.

The site will include an interactive floor plan, online booth sales, exhibitor center, agenda builder, printable itinerary, social peer-to-peer matching (attendees can create a profile of personal interests, and the system will provide matches), and an itinerary planner that will suggest exhibitor and educational sessions that match attendees' interests.

The show will include higher-education programming, certification for operators, and business and social opportunities on the show floor.

NACE will exhibit at COATING 2012 to help promote its activities in the performance coatings world, PCI said.

SSPC 2012

Meanwhile, SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings is closing in on its second solo show, dedicated to protective, marine, industrial and commercial coatings. Last year, the show drew nearly 2,000 attendees and 125 exhibitors.

More than 100 exhibitors from every segment of the industry have registered for the 2012 event, to be held Jan. 30-Feb. 2 in Tampa, FL.

A searchable conference schedule is now available.
