Safety Tools Allmet has rounded out its exclusive line of sparkless grinders and cutting tools with a custom anti-static suitcase—a system designed for “cold” coatings and corrosion removal in explosive environments.
The tools and case can be used in the oil, gas and offshore industries and other hazardous areas without a Hot Work permit or shut-down.
Corrosion, Coatings Removal
“Our products help our customers do all sorts of mechanical work, as well as coating and corrosion removal work, in Classified Areas on a daily basis while keeping them as safe as possible,” said Hector Maggi, Vice President of Marketing & Sales for TFT-Pneumatic Industrial Tools, the exclusive North American distributor of Safety Tools.

“Removing corrosion and grinding/cutting metal safely in explosive environments without a Hot Work permit and shutting in/down is what we do all day long.”
Launched about 10 years ago with support from Norwegian gas and oil company Statoil, Safety Tools has developed a variety of grinders and cutting tools for work in DNV-certified areas. The diverse line ranges from a hand-held die grinder to deck cutting robots.
All are classified as Cold Work and are approved for Class 1, Division 1 and 2 hazardous locations.
Product Features
Without creating heat or hot sparks—even if dropped—Safety Tools’ grinders grind to white metal while leaving an anchor profile of up to 75 microns, according to the manufacturer.
The tools are made of a proprietary tungsten carbide material and operate at a slower speed than conventional grinders (1,000 to 3,000 RPMs, as opposed to 10,000 to 20,000), resulting in quieter operation (less than 82 dB), less dust and less vibration, the company says.
The cold operation also prevents the production of toxic isocyanides, which can occur as polyurethane paint heats up during hot grinding.
The paint is cut and coiled, dropping in larger particles to the ground, rather than flying off as dust, the company says. Each grinder bit has a life span of three to five years if used on a daily basis.
Anti-Static Suitcase
Safety Tools’ new suitcase, developed in partnership with Pelican Products, is designed for sturdier protection and fitted with a proprietary foam that prevents the build-up of static electricity and helps extend the tools’ lifetime.
The suitcase is custom built according to customers’ specifications. Customers may choose among five tools, 10 files, and one disc, Maggi said.
