The Birmingham (AL) Water Works and Sewer Board will accept bids Friday (Sept. 30) for two projects: blasting, painting and related work on tanks and silos at three plants; and blasting and painting of flocculator arms and motors at two plants.

 The project includes coating of the Carbon Silo and the Lime Silo

The contracts will be awarded separately; no estimated value was released.

Silos and Tanks

This project involves cleaning and coating the exterior surfaces of existing tanks and silos at three filter plants using a polyurethane system. The contract includes these structures:

• A 10-foot diameter x 29-foot-long tank;

• A 12-foot diameter x 27-foot-long tank;

• A 12-foot diameter x 37-foot-high silo;

• A 12-foot diameter x 47-foot-high silo;

• A 12-foot diameter x 45-foot-high silo;

• An 18-foot diameter x 26-foot-high hopper;

• A 10-by-12-foot tank; and

• A 10.67-by-6.5-foot tank.

Exterior surfaces will be blast-cleaned with a reduced- or dust-free abrasive to a near-white finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with a zinc-rich urethane primer, aliphatic polyurethane intermediate, epoxy stripe coat, and fluoropolymer finish.

The existing coatings may contain lead and will be handled as hazardous materials.

Flocculator Painting

This project involves cleaning and coating the exterior surfaces of existing flocculator arms, walkways and motors at two plants. The items will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a near-white finish (SSPC-SP 10) and coated with a zinc-rich primer, polyamide epoxy intermediate, and hybrid urethane finish.

Site visits for both projects were conducted Sept. 20.

The Birmingham Water Works system dates to 1873, just two years after the city’s founding. The system has four water sources; about 3,903 miles of transmission lines; and more than 500 employees.
