Global production of protective and marine coatings is surging, with Jotun, Praxair and MesoCoat announcing new facilities in the U.S. and abroad.

Jotun Cosco Breaks Ground in China

Jotun Cosco Marine Coatings Co., Ltd., a joint-venture of Cosco International and Jotun A/S in Norway, has broken ground on a new plant in the Qingdao National High-tech Industrial Development Zone, in southeast China.

The new facility will be designed to meet the continually growing needs of China’s marine coating market and strengthen JCMC’s competitive advantage in the region. The 85,333-square-meter plant (about 918,000 square feet) is expected to begin production by the end of 2012.

Jotun Cosco’s new plant will have a designed total annual production capacity of 50 million liters (about 13.2 million US gallons).

The facility will have a designed total annual production capacity of 50 million liters (about 13.2 million US gallons), equivalent to about 67,500 tons.

The total capital investment is estimated at $47.4 million.

Praxair Opens in Singapore

Praxair Surface Technologies Inc., a subsidiary of Praxair Inc., has opened a new coating manufacturing facility in Singapore to support increasing demand for coatings in the aviation and energy markets.

The facility will initially provide thermal spray coatings for gate valve and other critical components used in oil and natural gas production. Additional capabilities are planned to serve aviation and industrial gas turbine applications.

The new plant positions Praxair to provide coatings services in Southeast Asia for manufacturers of equipment components that require protection against abrasion, corrosion, erosion, high temperature and wear.

Praxair launched coating operations in Singapore nearly 20 years ago. For about the last five years, the company’s manufacturing capability in Singapore has been a dedicated coating center located with a major aircraft engine manufacturer. Praxair Surface Technologies has coatings operations around the world, with Asian facilities located in China, India, Japan and South Korea.

Praxair Surface Technologies offers a comprehensive slate of high-performance coatings and technologies to the aviation, energy, and other industries. Praxair Inc. is the largest industrial gases company in North and South America.

MesoCoat Set to Open in Ohio

Abakan Inc., the new owner of MesoCoat Inc., has finalized an agreement on a new 10,000-square-foot facility in Eastlake, OH.

The plant is designed to accommodate two metal fusion cladding lines for CermaClad and thermal spray coating cells for PComP, including a metallurgical and analytical lab.

MesoCoat now occupies two facilities in Ohio with a third 11,000-square-foot facility under construction and set to begin production in January 2012. The new Eastlake plant—the fourth within a five-mile radius—will primarily be used for cladding plates and components for the oil and gas, mining and shipbuilding industries and for thermal spray coatings to serve the oil and gas and mining industries.

At this facility, MesoCoat will be installing a 600 kW fusion cladding arc lamp system—one of the most powerful arc lamps ever manufactured, the company says.

“With this arc lamp system, and the internal pipe diameter cladding system that was delivered in August, we now have adequate fusion cladding capacity to do smaller component coating jobs until our first full-size facility comes on-stream in first quarter 2012,” said MesoCoat CEO Andrew Sherman.

Miami-based Abakan purchased a controlling interest in MesoCoat over the summer.
