SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings is accepting nominations for its sixth annual Structure Awards, which honor excellence in protective coatings projects.

The awards, which recognize project teams of contractors, designers, end users and coating manufacturers, will be presented at a luncheon Jan. 31 at SSPC’s 2012 Conference in Tampa, FL.

Structure Award winners are published in JPCL.

The winning structures will also be featured in a photo essay in JPCL: Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings after the conference.

Award Categories

All types of structures are eligible for the awards, including bridges, tanks and industrial and commercial facilities. Except for the Charles G. Munger (longevity) and Military Coatings Project awards, all projects must have been completed between July 1, 2010, and June 30, 2011.  (The Munger and military awards have no date requirement.)

Nominations are due by Oct. 31.

Awards are available in these categories.

The Crone Knoy Award recognizes outstanding achievement in commercial or industrial coatings work that demonstrates innovation, durability or utility. This includes excellence in craftsmanship or execution of work, use of state-of-the-art techniques, or use of products to creatively solve problems or provide long-term service.

The Charles G. Munger (Longevity) Award honors an outstanding industrial or commercial coatings project that demonstrates longevity of the original coating. The structure may have had spot repairs or overcoating, so long as the original coating is intact.

The William Johnson Award recognizes aesthetic merit in industrial or commercial coatings work. This includes color, gloss, texture, or how the coating complements its environment while enhancing the structure. The coating may represent a theme, object or graphic design.

The George Campbell Award honors outstanding achievement in the completion of a difficult or complex industrial or commercial coatings project.

This may include work performed in a harsh or extreme environment; projects completed under strict time constraints, with limited access, or in high traffic areas; work on a structure with complex components; or projects that require coordination with multiple trades or subcontractors.

The Military Coatings Project Award of Excellence recognizes exceptional coatings work performed on U.S. military ships, structures or facilities.

Other Requirements

A representative of the structure owner must attend the awards luncheon to accept the award and to give permission for the information to appear in JPCL.
