International Paint has unveiled a new copper-free antifouling that has gained U.S. Navy approval for several applications.

Interspeed 5640 is a low-VOC antifouling that uses the latest non-metallic biodegradable organic biocides to deliver fouling protection of up to 36 months, the manufacturer reports.

A U.S. Naval vessel shows copper-free Interspeed 5640 (light red, at right) next to a copper-based antifouling product (darker red, left) after 12 months of service.

The coating can be applied at newbuilding, maintenance or repair drydocking for major refurbishment or to upgrade/repair existing tin-free copolymers and tin-free ablative/CDP antifoulings.

Navy Approval

With U.S. Naval vessels in mind, Interspeed 5640 was developed to meet—and has been approved for —MIL-PRF-24647 Type I Classes 1 & 2, Grades A & B, Applications 1 & 4. The coating is suitable for military vessels trading in US coastal waters and beyond, the company says.

The approval follows years of research dedicated to meeting the U.S. Navy’s stated aims of metal-free fouling control, International Paint said in a release.

“This approval now allows government specifiers and end users an alternative option for fouling control, particularly in areas where copper-free products are a prerequisite,” said John Mangano, Business Development Manager, International Paint Marine Coatings.

Features and Specs

Interspeed 5640 is acceptable for use on aluminum hulls and can be applied over existing copper-based antifoulings in good condition. The coating provides a durable film that is compliant in all locations that require <400 g/l VOC content. International Paint says the coating is easy to apply and leaves a smooth hull.

Other product information:

· Color: Red or black

· Volume Solids: 58% ± 2% (ISO 2813:1978)

· Typical Film Thickness: 5 mils dry, 8.6 mils wet

· Hard Dry/Time Before Flooding: 45 minutes at 77°F / 12 hours at 77°F

· VOC: 388 g/l (EPA Method 24)

· Application Method: Airless spray, brush, roller

The new product complements International Paint’s existing range of antifouling products for the U.S. military and commercial sectors. The lineup also includes Interspeed 640, Intersmooth 460, Intersleek 757, and Intersleek 900.
