Hybrid Coating Technologies has introduced a new line of Green Polyurethane industrial and specialty coatings made completely without hazardous isocyanates.
Green Polyurethane (also called hybrid non-isocyanate polyurethane, or HNIPU) is a hybrid material that combines the chemical resistance of epoxy with the durability and wear resistance of polyurethane, says HCT, of San Francisco.
HCT calls the 12-product line the first modified hybrid polyurethane coatings manufactured without any isocyanates in the process.
Isocyanates have come under increasing regulatory scrutiny as hazardous substances. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently issued action plans to address the potential health risks of methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI), toluene diisocyanate (TDI), and related compounds.
2 Product Lines
The Green Polyurethane line includes six two-component protective coatings designed for heavy traffic and corrosive surfaces, including chemical plants; marine applications; military equipment; pipe linings; flooring for civil, industrial and military engineering; food processing facilities; and automotive spray booths.
Three of the formulations, made for indoor and outdoor applications, include UV inhibitors.

The line also includes six two-component floor coatings designed for use in industrial-grade applications, including high humidity environments and applications with special sanitary requirements. The floor coatings are made to be chemical-, wear- and impact-resistant.
All 12 products can be customized for a variety of substrates and application temperatures. Anti-corrosive primer should be used with metal substrates, the company advises.
Product Features
HCT says Green Polyurethane high-performance coatings are:
- Suitable for application on wet substrates and able to cure in cold conditions; and
- More durable than conventional polyurethane-based coatings.
The company contends that the coatings:
- Resist corrosion, chemicals and wear better than conventional polyurethanes;
- Require only one coat, in most cases; and
- Maintain stability against chemical decomposition upon contact with water.
The company warranties the coatings for up to 20 years.
Greener Reactions Touted
Green PU is produced with “greener” solventless reaction conditions than those that occur in conventional PU production, HCT says. The product also uses a proprietary ingredient, Hydroxy Urethane Modifier (HUM), which is also produced with a greener solventless reaction and accelerates the curing reaction, according to HCT.
Product Claims
HCT distinguishes its line from “isocyanate-free” claims of products that leave “minimal to no free isocyanates post–reaction.” Green PU “does not use isocyanates at any point in the production process and thereby removes this hazardous source completely from the chemistry of the product,” the manufacturer says.

HCT says its product has been tested and the claims regarding structural and chemical properties verified by the Polymer Institute (Germany) and Harlan Associates, Paint Research Laboratory (USA).
