Evans Analytical Group Inc. (EAG), a global provider of surface analysis and materials characterization services, has acquired Chemir Analytical Services and its affiliates CAS-MI Laboratories and Cyanta Analytical Services.

The acquisitions will expand EAG’s investigational, regulatory and product development capabilities across a variety of industries, including the coatings industry, the Sunnyvale, CA-based company said.

Chemir and CAS-MI will continue to operate under their current names, and Cyanta will begin the process to be renamed EAG Life Sciences to reflect its planned expansion of service offerings.

All three laboratories will continue operations at their respective facilities.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Beyond Surface Analysis

The acquisition will allow EAG to better serve the industry-specific needs of its diverse clients, including those seeking to develop novel coating technologies beyond surface analysis investigations, EAG said. Other clients include medical device and pharmaceutical companies.

Clients will also have greater access to industry leading analytical capabilities, to determine the source of product failures or help defend a patent infringement case, and to a worldwide network of laboratories and surface analysis and materials characterization capabilities to support product development and analytical investigations, EAG said.

The deal will also shore up and expand the global reach of CAS-MI, Chemir and Cyanta, which have been focused mainly on the U.S. market, officials said.

‘A Stronger Partner’

EAG is a global, fully integrated, independent laboratory network, majority owned by Odyssey Investment Partners LLC, a private equity firm with more than $2 billion in capital under management.  EAG’s Materials Characterization Division provides analytical services focused on surface analysis and materials characterization in support of multiple industries.

EAG CEO Harry Davoody said the acquisition would allow his company to deliver “across a broader range of analytical, test and development offerings.”

“The combination of our companies and integrated scope of services means EAG is a stronger partner for our clients, enabling them to more effectively achieve their time to market or solutions goals.”

He added: “EAG is committed to providing the resources for Chemir and its laboratories to be a trusted partner for customers’ projects on a long-term basis.”

About the Companies

CAS-MI Laboratories of Ypsilanti, MI, has provided analytical services for the polymer, paints, coatings, adhesives and sealants industries since 1943. The company also provides outsourced concept-to-commercialization product development for commercial polymer, paint, coating and industrial chemical needs.

CAS-MI Laboratories’ services include
manufacturing support and consulting.

CAS-MI specializes in analytical investigations involving deformulation, contaminant identification, products failures, method development and litigation support for paints, coatings, polymers, elastomers and a wide variety of other materials.

Chemir Analytical Services, an independent lab based in St. Louis, MO, has built its reputation by solving challenges associated with product failures across diverse industries. Its services include deformulation (reverse engineering), contaminant and impurity identification, product failure analysis, analytical method development, custom synthesis, polymer characterization and patents.

for a variety of industries.

Cyanta Analytical Services, also of St. Louis, MO, provides services to support pharmaceutical and medical device development.  Cyanta’s services support early- to late-phase projects, including regulatory analytical investigations.

‘Our Share of Hurdles’

David W. Riggs, PE, president of Chemir, said the acquisition would bring much-needed stability to his company.

“Over the past year and a half, we have experienced our share of hurdles,” Riggs said, “and with EAG as our new owner, we have the financial resources and stability our clients deserve.”

He added: “We believe this acquisition will greatly enhance our failure analysis and investigational capabilities due to EAG’s extensive knowledge and instrumentation related to materials characterization and surface analysis.”
