OSHA compliance requires

that employers determine when

respiratory protection is required

to control worker exposures.

The Journal of Protective Coatings & Linings and the Society for Protective Coatings will present "Developing an OSHA-Compliant Respiratory Protection Program" from 11 a.m. to noon EDT March 9.  The program was rescheduled from Feb. 23, due to technical difficulties.

The program is part of the JPCL/SSPC Webinar Education Series, which provides continuing education for SSPC recertifications and technology updates on important topics.

Other recent series topics have included disposing of waste water in UHP operations, writing good bridge specifications, advances in polyurethane and polyurea technology, and fall protection.

OSHA Protection Standards

The OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard requires that employers whose employees use respiratory protection implement a respiratory protection program. Full compliance means that employers must be able to determine when the use of respiratory protection is appropriate to control worker exposure to airborne hazards—and, when it is, to use it in accordance with a written program that addresses the program elements of the standard.

Webinar presenter Stan Liang, of KTA-Tator Inc., will address a variety of approaches to controlling worker exposure to respiratory hazards, such as ventilation or other engineering controls, job rotation or other administrative controls, and respiratory protection. The webinar will include a discussion of when OSHA permits the use of respiratory protection. Participants may register here free.

CEU Credits

SSPC is an accredited training provider for the Florida Board of Professional Engineers (FBPE), and Professional Engineers in Florida may submit SSPC Webinar Continuing Education Units to the board. Those who wish to do so must download the FBPE CEU form and pass the Webinar Exam.  The cost of the test is $25. Registration is available through the SSPC MarketPlace.

“Containment and Disposal of Waste Water in UHP Operations,” presented Feb. 22 by Richard Burgess of KTA-Tator Inc., focuses on current management practices for the containment and disposal of waste generated by High Pressure Waterjetting and Ultra High Pressure Waterjetting.

HPWJ and UHPWJ are increasingly being used in industrial painting for surface preparation of steel surfaces, including the removal of coatings containing lead and other heavy metals. Such applications carry the same responsibilities and obligations for waste management as abrasive blast cleaning.
NLB Corp.

“Advances in Polyurethane and Polyurea Technology,” presented Feb. 22 by Jay Helsel of KTA-Tator Inc., describes the basic chemistries of polyurethanes, polyureas and hybrids, as well as enhanced performance properties from recent advancements in these technologies.

“Monitoring Environmental Conditions for Cleaning and Painting Operations,” presented Feb. 23 by Bill Corbett of KTA-Tator Inc., addresses the procedures associated with monitoring prevailing conditions of air and surface temperatures, relative humidity, dew point temperature and wind speed before and during surface preparation and coating installation.

DeFelsko

DeFelsko

“Assuring Fall Protection When Working at Heights,” presented Feb. 24 by Bill Liang of KTA-Tator Inc., provides an overview of what employers should consider when implementing a safety program to control workplace fall hazards. The OSHA Construction Industry Fall Protection Standard requires that workers be protected from fall hazards—the leading cause of death in the workplace. In addition to compliance with OSHA, proper planning for and use of fall protection is critical to protect workers from this hazard.
