Tank fabricator and lining applicator Goad Company has rolled out N-FUZE Lining Technology, capping a six-year R&D effort to address what the company calls the “Achilles heel” of tank linings.

The company will exhibit the technology in June at the National Association for Surface Finishing’s annual trade show and conference in Chicago.
The patent-pending technology was developed in response to “a very specific and extremely corrosive application in our plating and metal finishing industry involving the processing of parts in chromic acid-based solutions,” said Goad spokesman Joe Renaud.
Typically, the processing tanks that contain these solutions are constructed of carbon steel and have some sort of lining to protect the steel, Renaud noted. Nevertheless, he added, some owners and operators of these processes experience leaks or lining failures after 12 to 24 months of service.
Focus on Process
Eventually, Renaud said, Goad focused on the traditional method of tank lining via the popular manual process of hot air welding.
“One big problem had to do with the execution of the process: the fact that the success of this technique completely depended upon perfect accomplishment of hundreds and hundreds of lineal feet of welding—by hand, in the typical process tank,” Renaud said.
Another issue was the “inherent and previously-little-understood result of seaming together lots of sheets and sheets of vinyl.” If even tiny areas of those seams failed, the flaws would form “an efficient highway or grid of channels behind the sheets that actually speed leaking corrosive material to the weakest areas of steel tanks, the welds.”
The N-FUZE lining technology addresses those and other concerns, Renaud said.
The company says the technology “exceeds the performance of the half-century-old lining technique vital to the containment” of valuable and/or corrosive chemicals.
“We are delighted to have solved the welding drawbacks and long-term repair problems of a proven and durable lining material,” said company president Curtis Goad.
Missouri-based Goad Co. is a custom fabricator of corrosion-resistant process tanks and an applicator of high-performance tank linings. The company designs, builds and installs process lines and environmental compliance equipment. Goad has served the North American market since 1955.
