Hillsborough County, FL, has awarded a $10,591,053 contract to American Bridge Co., of Tampa, to perform major repairs on the Platt Street Bridge.
The 421-foot-long bascule bridge, which was built in 1926, spans the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa.
The project includes abrasive blast-cleaning and coating new steel as well as abrasive blast-cleaning, removing chlorides, sulfates, and nitrate, and recoating existing steel that is currently coated with lead-bearing systems.
AISC Sophisticated Paint Endorsement or SSPC-QP 3 certification is required for the shop-coatings work, while SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications are required for the field surface preparation and painting. The contract also requires the use of a NACE- or SSPC-certified quality control inspector for the shop and field work.
The project also includes applying a Florida Department of Transportation Class 5 finish to 45,100 square feet of concrete; painting interior and exterior control house and storage building surfaces; removing asbestos mastic coatings from 3,400 square feet of machinery room enclosure surfaces; and waterproofing post-tensioning anchorages with elastomeric polyurethane.
