HydroThane, HMG Paints’ new water-based 2K polyurethane topcoat, is a full-gloss, isocyanate-cured topcoat designed for the rail industry.
HydroThane has been tested—and is has now been specified for use—by Railcare Wolverton, a leading UK specialist in maintaining and refurbishing railway rolling stock, according to HMG.
The product is the newest in HMG’s Hydro line, which also includes HydroPrime, a two-pack anti-corrosive waterborne epoxy primer; and HydroBase, an advanced water-based basecoat in solid, metallic and pearl finishes.
‘Demanding Technical Requirements’
The manufacturer says HydroThane’s chemical-resistant formulation makes it easy to remove solvent-based magic marker ink and aerosol paint by pressure washing or cleaning without damaging the topcoat.
“The rail industry has particularly demanding technical requirements, covered in the Railway Group Standard and Joint Leasing Company performance specifications, and the new Hydro products have been specifically developed with these in mind,” says Brian Scholey, Technical Sales Manager, Rail, for HMG, the UK-based specialist surface coatings producer.

“We want to take a lead in supplying the industry with greener, innovative, water-based coatings and were delighted when Railcare agreed to compare HydroThane with its current waterborne topcoat.”
The test involved painting half of the car with the company’s existing waterborne topcoat and half with HydroThane, officials said. “As a result of this and subsequent tests, Railcare is now happy to use HydroThane for their rail repainting,” HMG said.
Features and Performance
The topcoat can be applied wet-on-wet over the HydroPrime 2K epoxy primer. Drying time can be as little as two hours, at low-bake temperatures, the company says.
The product “requires few major changes to paint application systems,” HMG says. “No more than two coats are needed on most substrates, and the VOC content is ultra low, eliminating harmful emissions.”
HydroThane delivers color opacity and chip and scratch resistance. The product is backed by a 10-year warranty and in-depth technical support.
HydroThane is available in a wide color range, and the company offers a color-matching service.
HMG also produces Grathane, a water-based interior paint for rail applications that can be applied by brush or roller. Grathane uses HydroPrime as the undercoat and also boasts excellent durability and anti-graffiti properties.
