Pipeline Coating Called Self-Healing

VISCOTAQ

Kleiss & Co., manufacturer and distributor of pipeline equipment, has introduced VISCOTAQ, billed as a “smart” coating for the protection of underground and aboveground substrates against corrosion.

VISCOTAQ is composed of “materials with specific rheological behavior,” allowing for “easy and failure-free application in the field,” the company says.

VISCOTAQ consists of amorphous a-polar polyolefins. The material has been designed in such a way that, as a solid, it shows both elastic and fluid properties. These properties give the coating self-healing characteristics, according to the manufacturer.

Features and Performance

Kleiss says the coating can eliminate salt and osmosis problems, because it is impermeable to water. Rinsing with clean water in remote areas is not necessary.

The coating offers excellent adhesion, the company says, because it is actually pushed to the substrate by air pressure. Also, the coating flows into the pores of the pipe, creating “a very intimate match” with the substrate, the company says.

The coating purportedly has self-healing characteristics. “Minor pinholes will be dealt with by the wetting and viscous properties of the coat wrap, and damages will heal automatically,” according to the manufacturer.

The material is designed to overcome typical coating rehabilitation problems, due to its impermeable character to moisture and gases and its “immediate adhesion to any material,” the company says.

Prep and Permeability

Surface preparation requires only ST-2 removal of sand, loose parts and grease. Abrasive blast cleaning is more effective, but not necessary, the company says.

The material is made of amorphous a-polar polyolefins with no reactive groups and free radicals. It has an extremely low permeability for water and is impermeable for moisture under ambient conditions. Due to the amorphous structure, the coating will wet the surface of the substrate up to a physical molecular level.

The VISCOTAQ line also includes a sealant, pastes and coat wraps. In North America, VISCOTAQ is distributed by Amcorr Products and Services (www.amcorrusa.com), of San Antonio, TX, and Calgary, Canada.
