AkzoNobel Ranked No. 1 in Sustainability

AkzoNobel has been named the 2010-11 "Supersector leader" for the chemicals industry in Dow Jones' Sustainability World Index, the largest global analysis of corporate sustainability leadership.

The world's largest paint and coatings company, which is also a major producer of specialty chemicals, is one of 18 Supersector leaders in this year's index, having achieved the highest score in its industry. This marks AkzoNobel's sixth year on the list; last year, it ranked second in its industry.

"Our first-place ranking, coupled with our consistent performance over the last few years, is clear evidence of how successfully sustainability is being integrated into our global operations," said CEO Hans Wijers, who also acknowledged the contribution made by the company's employees around the world.

"We are fully aware that the future success of our customers and our own business activities is inextricably linked to the effectiveness of our sustainability efforts. We therefore refuse to let our standards slip and will continue to strive for improvement in all areas in order to maintain our leadership status."

Sustainability Measures

Dow Jones' Sustainability World Index (DJSWI) had 318 companies this year.

The World Index is one of more than a dozen Sustainability Indexes (www.sustainability-indexes.com) compiled by Dow Jones in conjunction with Sustainable Asset Management Group (SAM), a Zurich-based investment boutique focused on sustainability investing.

Launched in 1999, the Indexes track the financial performance of the leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide.

The annual review of each Index is based on analysis of corporate economic, environmental and social performance, assessing issues such as corporate governance, risk management, branding, climate change mitigation, supply chain standards, and labor practices. The Index includes general and industry-specific sustainability criteria for each of the 57 sectors defined according to the Industry Classification Benchmark (ICB).

Dow Marks 10th Year on List

This year's World Index also includes The Dow Chemical Company, marking its 10th year on the list.

Dow was one of only nine chemical companies to be recognized in the World Index. Dow said it had achieved the highest possible score for Operational Eco-efficiency and Environmental Reporting, as well as the highest score in the sector for Standards for Suppliers. The company's overall score was 83 percent—28 percentage points higher than the average for the industry group, according to Dow.

"Dow people are setting the standard for sustainability every day by bringing our science and innovation to benefit our customers, our communities, and society," said Neil Hawkins, Dow's vice president of Sustainability and EH&S.

"The DJSI is a well-known benchmark of sustainability performance and progressive business strategy. Their recognition is especially significant in a world in which transparency and collaboration are the drivers of real change."

Dow 2015 Goals include sustainable chemistry goals that drive product innovation, targets that address climate change and energy, reducing its own footprint, and protecting human health and the environment.

Air Products Recognized

Industrial chemical producer Air Products has been included on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index as one of the best performing sustainable companies for 2010/11.

"Our people are very proud to have our sustainability accomplishments recognized by the DJSI Indexes," said John McGlade, chairman, president and CEO of Air Products. "We are proud of our performance against our environmental goals and will continue to push to higher levels of performance.

"At the same time, we're pleased to be able to help our customers in their efforts to improve the efficiency and sustainability of their products and manufacturing processes with our ever-expanding portfolio of gas, materials and technology offerings and solutions."

Air Products recently released its 2010 Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Sustainability Report describing its sustainability priorities, impacts and opportunities. The report is at www.airproducts.com/responsibility.
