Historic Cape Blanco Lighthouse Painting Project Out to Bid

The Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation will accept sealed bids on August 31st, 2010, from SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certified contractors for surface preparation and coatings application on the Cape Blanco State Lighthouse. This structure was the premier lighthouse in the state to be outfitted with a first-order Fresnel Lens when it was built in 1870. Construction of the lighthouse was complicated by the site's location on a cliff with no access road. In an effort to cut out transportation costs, the state commissioned a local resident to furnish the required 200,000 bricks at the site. Only 80,000 of the bricks were of fair enough quality to use, so the remaining supplies had to be brought to the site through the surf. The primary function of the lighthouse in 1870 was to warn ships of the surrounding reefs. Today, Cape Blanco is open to the public for guided tours and listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Cape Blanco LighthouseThe project includes cleaning and painting existing wood and metal surfaces associated with the lantern and tower. The metal will be coated with a zinc-epoxy-urethane system.  The wood will be painted with an oil-based primer and a latex enamel finish. The exterior masonry walls, which were last painted in 2003 with an elastomeric finish, will be cleaned as part of this project and an alternate for applying sacrificial wax anti-graffiti coating is included. The project has an estimated value of $56,000-$65,000.
