Suffolk County, NY, will accept sealed bids Aug. 26 for rehabilitation of the Smith Point Bridge. The bascule drawbridge, 1,216 feet long and 28 feet wide, connects Mastic Beach, NY, and Fire Island, NY, over Narrow Bay and carries the William Floyd Highway. The bridge opened in 1959 as a part of a major beach restoration project that also included the development of Smith Point County Park.
The project includes cleaning and recoating superstructure surfaces, including the 80-foot-long main span, bascule leaves, and two flanking spans and towers. The steel will be abrasive blast-cleaned to a Near White finish (SSPC-SP 10) and recoated with a zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate, and a urethane finish. The contract includes controlling the emission of the existing lead-bearing coatings (SSPC-Guide 6).
