M & J Construction Company of Pinellas County, Inc. of Tarpon Springs, FL, secured a contract of $3,457,957.20 from the Florida Department of Transportation to perform repairs and cleaning on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, a 29,040-foot-long, continuous, prestressed concrete, cable-stayed bridge that spans Tampa Bay and carries I-275 and US 19. The “Flag Bridge” was rebuilt in 1987, replacing the original cantilever bridge that was partly destroyed in 1980 after a freighter collided with the southbound span, killing 35 people. In 1994, approaches from the old bridge were transformed into the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park. The new structure, designed by Figg & Muller, is equipped with a protection system designed to withstand an impact from an 87,000-ton ship. The project includes repairing the columns at Piers 106 and 117, and the external post-tensioning tendon ducts in the main span and high-level approach span units. The project also includes cleaning and coating pot bearing surfaces at Piers 106, 110, and 113-117. The contract requires FDOT pre-qualification in R&R major bridge concrete segmental construction.
