International Specialty Products Inc. (Wayne, N.J.) introduced Jaypol™ performance additives for water-based coatings, a series of dispersants, co-binders, and rheology modifiers based on acrylate chemistry.
The additives are formulated to advance the processing and performance attributes of coatings at low additive use levels, and are supplied in sodium and ammonium formulations for manufacturers that require flexibility in tailoring the moisture-resistance attributes of dry coating film, the water sensitivity of produced coatings, and other requirements such as electrolyte tolerance.
The series of products includes the following.
• Low-viscosity dispersing agents reported to offer broad processing latitude with no adverse reaction to high temperatures or changes in pH. The products are compatible with glycols, helping to simplify the manufacture of high-performance, high-sheen formulations;
• Co-binders that can serve as alternatives to coalescing agents and plasticizers, and function as an increasingly important technology for modifying the film properties of the primary paint binder. The co-binders are designed with different glass transition points, providing a number of options to modify the flexibility and hardness of commodity resins with minimal effect on other properties.
• Liquid dispersion polymers for thickening of water-based systems, offering rheological control at low use levels. The products include a 60%-solids sodium salt acrylic polymer, a powder form of the products that disperses efficiently and wets out properly in aqueous systems, and a 60%-solids ammonium salt polymer for use in lower water-sensitive systems.
