Great American Marketing Inc., a manufacturer of paint brushes, rollers, and related paint sundry items, announced plans for a merger with Howard Berger Company, a diversified hardware-product manufacturer, importer, and trading company.
Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Completion of the merger is anticipated by the end of the second quarter, pending regulatory approvals.
Howard Berger Company President Robert Winterstein said the merger would give the company a greater presence in the paint-applicator category and a distribution facility on the West Coast. Howard Berger is based in Cranbury, N.J., and Great American Marketing is based in Valencia, Calif.
Great American Marketing President Sherman Weiss said the merger provides his company with a China-based operation that includes designers, engineers, and associated support staff, and a distribution center near Shanghai. He said the companies would retain their own identities and would operate separately, while the merger would "maximize synergies." Winterstein and Weiss will remain president of the respective companies.
