Maryland Transportation Authority Seeking Bids for Bay Bridge Painting

Monday, April 12, 2010

Comment | More

The Maryland Transportation Authority will accept sealed bids on May 12th, 2010, for coatings application and miscellaneous repairs on the Westbound William Preston Lane, Jr. Memorial Bridge, which spans the Chesapeake Bay. The bridge and a parallel Eastbound structure are commonly referred to as the Bay Bridge. The bridge features a 1,500-foot-long suspension span and measures 22,790 feet in total length. The owner rejected two bids for a similar project in late-September; the new contract has a modified scope-of-work.

The contract, which requires SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certification, involves abrasive blast-cleaning and coating structural steel and interior and exterior pier surfaces on a nine-span section of the West girder spans, as well as power-tool cleaning and coating 180 steel rail posts. The exterior structural steel will be coated with an organic zinc-polyamide epoxy-aliphatic urethane system, the interior pier surfaces will be coated with a seawater ballast tank liner, and the rail posts will be coated with an aluminum epoxy mastic-polyamide epoxy-aliphatic urethane system. The contract includes erecting Class 1A containment (SSPC-Guide 6) to control the emission of the existing lead-bearing coatings.
