International Paint (London, UK), part of AkzoNobel (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), announced that it will invest $10.3 million to build a new testing laboratory for fire-protection products at its manufacturing site in Felling, UK.
The company stated that, according to forecasts, the demand for fire-protection materials is expected to double by 2018, mainly due to increasing regulations worldwide. International Paint already offers the Chartek® brand, primarily used to protect assets in offshore and onshore oil, gas, and chemical-processing facilities, and the Interchar® brand, used to protect onshore commercial facilities.
“This new facility will significantly improve our ability to satisfy our customers’ current and future fire protection requirements,” said Dipak Mistry, technical manager for International Paint’s Protective Coatings business. The new laboratory will form part of a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence for Fire Protection.
"Our intention is to bring new products to the market faster and drive the improvement of fire protection in the industry," Mistry said. "To achieve this we will be looking to recruit additional highly talented individuals to the existing development team." The new facility will create 14 new jobs and secure 30 at the site.
