No-Burn Inc. (Wadsworth, OH), a manufacturer of fire-resistive intumescent coatings, said it has collaborated with BASF Polyurethane Foam Enterprises LLC to complete fire-rating testing of a combined polyurethane foam/intumescent coating system.
The combined system—involving the application of No-Burn® Plus intumescent coating over polyurethane foam insulation—achieved the required ignition-barrier rating for code compliance under applicable sections of the International Building Code (IBC) and International Residential Code (IRC), the company said.
No-Burn said that, as a result of test completion, BASF’s rigid, open-cell and closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (SPF) products can be applied without a prescriptive ignition barrier if the intumescent coating is applied over the foam.
Bill Kish, president of No-Burn, said the combined SPF-intumescent coating system provides “a practical and economically attractive option for meeting ignition-barrier requirements.”
