The sloped roof of Seattle’s 605-foot Space Needle was recently painted in the image of the MLS Cup ball to commemorate MLS Cup 2009, Major League Soccer’s championship game. Devoe High Performance Coatings’ DEVGUARD™ 4306, a rust-preventative alkyd semigloss coating, was used to paint the soccer-ball image.
The unique roof design featured the official MLS Cup 2009 logo, as well as the logos of the two participating teams, LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake. Seattle-based Omega Graphics & Signs, LLC spearheaded the onsite work for the project by utilizing a combination of large digital prints for the various logos and paint for the ball’s image.
Devoe High Performance Coatings products were recommended for the Space Needle project by the company’s sister decorative division, Glidden™ Paints, a corporate partner of MLS since 2005. Glidden’s logo is also featured on the front of the jersey of the Columbus Crew soccer team. Columbus won MLS Cup 2008.
Devoe High Performance coatings are currently being used in the construction of two other stadiums for MLS teams—the New York Red Bulls and Philadelphia Union—both scheduled to open in time for the 2010 MLS season.
Chris Tiernay, vice president protective coatings, North America, said the Seattle project was a “perfect fit” for the company, based on Devoe’s “expertise in protective coatings and Glidden Paint’s ongoing partnership with Major League Soccer.”
Devoe High Performance Coatings and Glidden Paints are part of the AkzoNobel family of high-performance protective and decorative coatings companies. Earlier this year, the Devoe High Performance Coatings business merged with AkzoNobel’s Houston-based International Paint Protective Coatings business. The combined business offers a comprehensive range of protective coatings, linings and fire-protection products in North America.
