The U.S. Department of Labor recently announced nearly $55 million in green jobs grants, as authorized by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The grants are part of a $500 million Recovery Act initiative and will support job training and labor market information programs to help workers find jobs in expanding green industries.
The two categories receiving the grant awards are the Green Capacity Building Grants, totaling $5.8 million, and the State Labor Market Information Improvement Grants, totaling $48.8 million.
The Green Capacity Building Grants will help serve underserved communities, targeting American Indians, women, and at-risk youth and farm workers. The grant will increase training of 62 current Labor Department grant recipients to help individuals acquire jobs in green industries.
The State Labor Market Information Grants will enhance the labor exchange infrastructure by collecting labor market information to provide career opportunities within clean energy industries.
U.S. Secretary of Labor, Hilda L. Solis, stated, “These grants provide an immediate return, and they are part of a larger green initiative that will help lead to increased job placements and promote economic growth.”
