$72M to Puerto Rico for Water, WW Work

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded almost $72 million to Puerto Rico in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. The money will help the commonwealth finance overdue improvements to wastewater and drinking water systems and conduct water quality planning.

The Governor of Puerto Rico, Luis Fortuño, stated that the commonwealth is “enthused by the arrival of much needed Recovery Act funds and stand[s] ready to put them to work as soon as possible.” The Governor announced that five wastewater treatment plants are ready to start construction.

Out of the $72 million, EPA awarded $51,630,500 to the Puerto Rico Department of Environmental Quality for water quality protection projects and wastewater treatment; $19.5 million to the Puerto Rico Department of Health to improve water projects; and $526,300 for the commonwealth’s Water Quality Management Planning (WQMP) grant program.
