Crystal Extrusion Systems introduced an additional finish option for the company’s aluminum extrusions as an alternative to traditional anodization, described as a high-performance powder-coat paint that offers the appearance of clear anodized aluminum but with environmental, cost, and other benefits.
The company says the finish replicates the appearance of clear anodized aluminum for use in situations where the durability and surface properties of anodized “may not be of paramount importance.” The company says it continues to offer traditional aluminum anodize for applications where that particular finish is needed.
The powder-coat paint-finishing process is described as more environmentally benign than anodizing, while offering a wide array of colors and color consistency. The finish facilitates field-touchup painting of damaged areas, and provides a strong, long-lasting finish, the company says. The company uses PPG powder paint products to achieve the anodized look for aluminum extrusions. The finish is reported to meet American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) specifications for performance requirements for organic coatings on aluminum extrusions and panels: AAMA 2603, Pigmented Coatings; AAMA 2604, High Performance Organic Coatings; and AAMA 2605, Superior Performing Organic Coatings.
