The world’s most powerful wind turbine—the first of two—was successfully installed last Monday (April 9) at Vattenfall’s European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre, located off the coast of northeast Scotland.

The turbine is the first of 11 total to be deployed at the facility, according to Vattenfall, but what makes this specific turbine special is that it’s the first of two to be modified with internal power modes that allow more energy to be generated. These two turbines were increased from 8.4 to 8.8 MW; this is the first time the 8.8 MW model has been deployed commercially in the offshore wind industry.

The other nine turbines will reportedly fall into the 8.4 MW family, which will boost the output of the EOWDC to 93.2 MW, accounting for 70 percent of Aberdeen’s domestic electricity demand and annually displacing 134,128 tons of CO2.

The V164-8.4 MW and V164-8.8 MW wind turbines were manufactured and modified by MHI Vestas, each standing at a tip height of 191 meters (626 feet), with 80-meter (262-foot) blades.

Each of the turbines are being transported from Esbjerg to Aberdeen by Swire Blue Ocean’s vessel, the Pacific Orca. Once moved, the turbine will be lifted into position on the installed foundations.

The Pacific Orca is believed to be the world’s largest wind farm installation vessel.

“The turbines for the EOWDC, Scotland’s largest offshore wind test and demonstration facility, help secure Vattenfall’s vision to be fossil fuel free within one generation,” said Gunnar Groebler, Vattenfall’s Head of Business Area Wind. “The EOWDC, through its innovative approach to cost reduction and pioneering technologies, leads the industry drive towards generating clean and competitive wind energy power–one that will reinforce Scotland’s global energy status.”

Unique Foundations

Installation of the world’s most powerful wind turbines took place less than two weeks after the first of the EOWDC’s suction bucket jacket foundations was successfully installed. According to Clean Technica, the foundations were put in place using a new method that secured the massive towers to the seafloor in a manner that is faster, quieter and more environmentally friendly.

The EOWDC is the first offshore wind project to deploy the foundations at commercial scale. Pairing this with these turbines is also reportedly an industry first. The facility is Scotland’s largest offshore wind test and demonstration facility, currently being developed by Vattenfall-owned Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm Limited.
