Corrosion Causes Closure of UK Rail Station

The mainline station at Liverpool Lime Street in England was closed Sunday (Jan. 7) after engineers discovered damage to the structure responsible for containing cables.

Station Closure

Pictures released by John Tilley, regional organizer for the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers, showed that the gantry, the structure in question that contained cables running from the tracks into the terminus, was severely corroded. This meant trains could not pass safely underneath.

In an interview with the ECHO, Tilley also expressed his concern that the infrastructure leading into Lime Street had become dilapidated.

Tilley added that he was worried the damage hadn’t been picked up, and that Network Rail, the owner and infrastructure manager of much of the rail network in England, was carrying out vanity projects while some of the day-to-day things are “getting missed.”

“That’s not something that broke overnight. The structure was completely corroded,” Tilley said. “They looked at the brickwork, the wall it goes on—we’ve had enough problems with walls at Lime Street.

“This shows the dilapidated state of the infrastructure.”

According to ECHO, a Network Rail spokesman said, “The corroded gantry on the line into Liverpool Lime Street was spotted by engineers carrying out routine inspections.

"We shut the line for emergency repairs, which engineers completed overnight. The station fully reopened in time for the start of service on Monday.”

Travelers were warned that they may still experience interruptions, given strikes occurring on Northern Rail and Merseyrail in regard to the removal of guards from trains.

Previous Closure

The same station closed late February 2017 when a wall collapsed onto the tracks, noted the BBC. At the time, 200 tons of debris fell onto all four tracks that serve as the approach to the station.

Service resumed a day earlier than planned in the wake of that incident.

The damage depicted in the pictures is very serious. It would be interesting to know how they have repaired the structures.

That's got to be the result of decades of neglect and very serious implications for the whole structure.
