With winter weather rolling in across the state, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has invited students to participate in a contest to paint local district snow plows with messages of snow driving safety.

The community outreach program, known as Paint the Plow, has allowed students to decorate the blades of PennDOT snowplows that will serve the community throughout the course of the winter. The student artwork will also promote public safety and awareness of the dangers of winter driving. Participating schools could also include patriotic images, mascots and state/local motifs in their entries.

The competition features both a “Judge’s Pick” and a “Fan Favorite” winner, with some districts having a winner per county and others featuring a district-wide winner. The Leechburg Area School District is one of nine school districts from five western Pennsylvania counties competing for the award of Fan Favorite.

Voting for this leg of the contest will remain open until Nov. 15. The picture with the most likes wins. For those interested in voting, visit PennDOT’s Facebook page.

Student Participation

According to TribLIVE, other school districts involved with the competition include Armstrong County School District, Butler Area Vocational Technical School and Clarion-Limestone School District, among others all across Pennsylvania.

“The students did a great job decorating the plows. We were very impressed,” said Mercer County Maintenance Manager Darrell Chapman, in regard to Mercer County entries. “We hope the process helped them gain a better understanding of the importance of sharing the road safely with larger vehicles, especially plow trucks during the winter months.“

While not all PennDOT districts participated in Paint the Plow, over 20 counties had schools participate in the contest.
