New Intumescents Made for Commercial, Industrial Use

Two new coating products from manufacturer Carboline Company (St. Louis) are made to provide fire protection for structural steel, inside and out.

Thermo-Sorb 263, for interior structural steel, is one of two new intumescent coatings from Carboline.

Thermo-Sorb 263 and Thermo-Sorb E are both VOC-compliant thin-film intumescent coatings made for commercial and light industrial applications. Thermo-Sorb 263 is designed for interior steel beams, columns, tubes and pipes. Thermo-Sorb E is recommended for exterior steel work.

Product Details

Thermo-Sorb 263 can provide up to a four-hour fire rating (depending on design), according to the company. The interior coating should be applied at 35 mils wet film thickness per coat, to dry to 26.7 mils per coat. The product has a VOC content of 149 grams per liter and must be applied over a compatible primer.

Thermo-Sorb E

Thermo-Sorb E is designed for external steel surfaces.

Thermo-Sorb E provides one to three hours of fire protection for exterior surfaces. It should be applied at 35 mils WFT per coat for a dry film thickness of 26.9 mils per coat, and has a VOC content of 147 grams per liter, according to Carboline.

Both coatings can be used as part of LEED-compliant designs, and both offer a decorative appearance, the company says. Both dry to recoat in four hours at 70 degrees Fahrenheit, according to product data.

Both products come in 5-gallon kits. Thermo-Sorb 263 has a shelf life of six months when stored properly; Thermo-Sorb E has a 12-month shelf life.
