MIC Research Nets Australian Team Honors

A researcher based out of the Swinburne University of Technology, in Australia, was recently recognized for his development of a method that lessens corrosion on submarines, which has provided both additional benefits for the sector and served as a financial asset for the Royal Australian Navy and Defense.

A team of Defense Materials Technology Centre researchers, led by Swinburne associate professor Scott Wade, was recognized for its work at the Maritime Australia Industry Innovation Awards. The team’s work involved research into microbiologically induced corrosion of maritime platforms.

"It's great that the efforts of the team members involved in the collaborative project has been recognized in these awards,” Wade said.

“The project is an excellent example of how industry and universities can come together to help solve real world problems."

Wade went on to add that the university will continue to work toward understanding microbiologically influenced corrosion, and “how we can minimize its effect to various key industries.”

Mark Hodge, CEO of DMTC, also added that “it is tremendous recognition of the quality and impact of our work, and of course that of Swinburne, noting the fundamental role played by Scott and his team.

“We anticipate this work will continue to have benefits in current and future Defence projects.”

The judging panel was comprised of former chiefs of the Navy.
